How to video-blog from communities with slow and intermittent internet access?

Suggestions from Brian:

To all of you wondering about how to vlog with a slow connection, I have one suggestion: 3ivx!

OK, I have more than one suggestion, but that is the first issue. 3ivx enabled me to upload 6-7 minute videos in decent resolution over what was at BEST an approximately 48.8k dial-up connection in Baghdad. It was also notoriously unreliable.

I would first say that no matter what anyone tells you, you don't need high bandwidth to post video to the web, it just helps you to hate life less.

(for that matter you don't need a super fast computer to do it either, but most people have forgotten about the good old days of wanting to kill yourself but being able to edit on 300 and 400mhz machines with a piddling amount of RAM.)

Anyway, first of all, the issue is in your video, a video of one interview or a relatively static shot with most of the same colors and little motion will compress smaller than a video with a lot of action, many cuts, different colors, etc.

For some examples, look at this video, which is an interview with one woman, it is about 7 mb, but is 5 minutes long:

This video is of daily life around Baghdad, and is about the same length, compressed in the same fashion, but is approximately 19 mb, so you can see the difference:

From Jay Dedman:

yeah...we could make a tutorial on freevlog.org for how to compress for dial-up.

PC: http://www.freevlog.org/index.php/2007/03/19/4-compress-for-the-web-windows-movie-maker/

Mac: http://www.freevlog.org/index.php/2007/03/19/41-compress-for-the-web-imovie/

then translate accordingly.

Freevlog is in 5 languages already.
